Audio-reactive DMX: BPM, transients, envelopes and spectral bands
What live-audio DSP signals actually are — tempo, transients, envelopes and bands — and how to wire them to fixtures without chaos.

Lead with signals you can hear
Audio-reactive lighting is not magic and it is not a playlist. The computer measures the incoming sound and turns measurements into numbers. Those numbers can drive dimmers, colour and movement. The quality of the feed matters more than the brand of the software.
A clean mixer record-out or loopback beats a room microphone. A mic hears the PA, the crowd, the ice machine and the neighbour’s kick drum. A board feed hears the mix. Use the board feed.
The useful measurements
BPM and beat are tempo estimates and a pulse on the beat. They are good for chases, steps and anything that should land on time. They are only as stable as the music and the detector. A spoken-word set will not give you a solid 128.
Key is an estimate of the tonal centre. It is useful for colour palettes. It is not a promise that the next track is in the same key, and it will wobble on atonal noise and FX-heavy breakdowns.
Spectral bands (bass, mid, high, or custom ranges) are how loud a slice of the spectrum is right now. Bass-band level onto a wash dimmer is the oldest trick that still works. High band onto a strobe without a gate is how you get a nervous rig.
Envelope (peak or RMS) is the overall loudness shape. Transient detectors fire on attacks — kicks, snares, clap hits. Use transients for accents. Use envelope for intensity that should breathe with the mix.
Smoothing, gates and taste
Raw spectrum is twitchy. A lag or smooth stage between a band and a wash dimmer is usually the difference between a nervous rig and a usable one. Too much smooth and the lights feel late. Too little and they chatter.
Gates stop strobes from firing on noise. Set a threshold so only real hits open the gate. Put a maximum rate on anything painful. A human should still be able to kill the strobe from a pad.
Map ranges on purpose. A bass envelope that already lives between 0.2 and 0.8 does not need to slam a dimmer from 0 to full. Scale it into a band that looks like the room — clubs often want a floor under the wash so the room never goes black on a breakdown unless you choose that.
What not to claim
Live DSP does not “understand the song.” It does not know verse from chorus unless you built that yourself with cues, timecode, or a human. Tempo, transients and bands are measurements. Treat them as measurements.
Room mics plus aggressive transients plus a full strobe rig is how you get complaints. Start with wash and a single accent fixture. Add movement after the intensity layer is boring in a good way.
A starter patch
Feed: loopback or mixer. Bass band → smooth → wash dimmer. Transient → gate → strobe or a short bump on a special. Beat pulse → a counter or chase for a small moving-head pattern. MIDI or a phone bank for blackout, haze and a colour override.
If a look cannot be stopped when the analysis is wrong, the patch is not finished. Analysis will be wrong sometimes. That is normal.
Feeds, latency and honesty
Loopback from the DJ software is convenient and can be a few milliseconds late. A mixer record-out is usually cleaner. A microphone in the booth is a last resort. If the lights feel late, check buffer sizes and whether you are analysing a heavily limited master that has no transient left.
Do not publish millisecond claims you have not measured. “Feels tight on this laptop with this buffer” is honest. “10 ms guaranteed” is a different document.
Custom frequency ranges help when the kick is a 50 Hz sine and the “bass” band you chose starts at 80 Hz. Listen, then move the band. The graph should match the record, not a default from a tutorial.
Common bad mappings
High-band to strobe with no gate. Mid-band to pan with no smooth. Full-range envelope to every dimmer in the room. Those three will make a busy mix look like a malfunction. Pick one intensity path and one accent path. Everything else is optional.
Key-to-colour can be lovely and can also flash through a rainbow on a noisy breakdown. Put a hold or a hysteresis on palette changes. The room should not change colour every time a synth detunes.
