Art-Net lighting control from a node-based desktop runtime

Art-Net is DMX-over-IP. WavePhase streams it from the same fixture patch you use for mapping, DSP and Live Control. Assign universes, pick a network interface, and keep lighting traffic on a wired LAN. Art-Net RDM is a Pro/Studio capability.

    WavePhaseShow NICSwitchNodes
WavePhase → dedicated NIC → gigabit switch → Art-Net nodes. Keep lighting off the office Wi-Fi.

    Who this is for

Clubs, booths and small stages that already own Art-Net nodes, and anyone who wants one desktop runtime instead of a separate desk plus media server.

    Who it is not for

Wireless-only venue networks, or buyers who need a guaranteed millisecond Art-Net SLA. Validate on the show switch.

    Art-Net versus sACN

    Art-Net

Widely supported on club and install nodes. Broadcast or unicast UDP 6454. Easy to fire into a visualiser on the same LAN. Universe numbering must match the node exactly.

    sACN / E1.31

Common on festival backbones. Multicast needs a disciplined VLAN. Same WavePhase patch — you change the output transport, not the graph.

    Topology and setup

    • Dedicated show NIC

Bind Art-Net to the lighting interface, not the laptop's Wi-Fi or a docking-station NIC that disappears when you unplug.

    • Wired star, not a daisy-chain of cheap switches

WavePhase → gigabit switch → nodes. Keep office, streaming and lighting VLANs apart so a file copy cannot stall DMX.

    • Universe math before the doors

Start addresses and universe numbers in the patch must match the hardware node. A visualiser receiving the same stream does not prove the node is patched.

    Implementation facts

    Transport
Art-Net DMX over UDP 6454 from the fixture patch.
    Free tier
1 universe (512 channels) during Early Access.
    RDM
Art-Net RDM is listed on Pro and Studio only.

    Art-Net in WavePhase

    1. 01Define fixtures and start addresses in the patch.
    2. 02Assign universes to an Art-Net output on the lighting NIC.
    3. 03Allow UDP 6454 through the OS firewall for that interface.
    4. 04Confirm node universe numbers match the patch, then test blackout on the real fixtures.

    Typical setups and mistakes

    • Single universe club

Free tier includes 1 universe of Art-Net during Early Access — enough for a wash, strobes and a pair of heads if you patch tightly.

    • Visualiser-only trap

The same output can feed a LAN visualiser. That does not prove the hardware node is patched correctly.

    • Wi-Fi Art-Net

Possible to misconfigure. Not a supported show transport. Use wired Ethernet.

    Limitations and transparency

WavePhase is the sender. Switch QoS, node firmware and cable plant are still your problem. Always walk the real fixtures before the room fills.
